                                   A Note From the President

The 8th graders and many of our teachers are in Yosemite this week.  This annual 8th grade trip with the Yosemite Institute is a wonderful opportunity for the kids for teambuilding activities and to really experience nature in the winter. I hope they have a wonderful time and come home with lots of great stories!

Our next PTA meeting on Thursday, Feb.11 at 7pm, we will be hosting Micah Jacobson, from the Boomerang Project (www.boomerangproject.com), the creators of WEB. WEB has been a wonderful program for us here at Lawson so we wanted to hear more great things from Micah.  Micah will be hosting assemblies for the kids by grade level during the day on Thursday, and that evening he will be hosting a parent assembly so you can hear his message as well.  The Lawson PTA is sponsoring him to provide developmentally appropriate encouragement for our kids that they would not get elsewhere. He was a big hit with the kids last year (he was the source of “that freaky house” that everyone draws) and he will build upon his message this year. I hope you can join us for a fun evening.

The Cupertino Union School District Board of Education will provide an opportunity for the entire Cupertino Union School District community to provide input and express their concerns regarding our budget situation during the regularly scheduled board meeting on February 9, 2010. It is our desire to conduct a meeting that is properly noticed, formally agendized, and accessible to all. Ample time will be allotted for questions from the audience. This topic will be an information/ discussion item, meaning that the Board will take no action on budget reductions at the meeting.

The board meeting will take place starting at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the Guided Learning Center at Collins Elementary School. The school is located at 10300 N. Blaney Avenue in Cupertino.

Please note that Jo Lucey, as Board President, will be conducting the board meeting.  The district staff will help facilitate the question and answer session.

As the budget cuts look worse, the school board will continue to dialogue with the parent community to address the means of balancing their budget for the 2010-11 school year.  Although the class reduction will only affect grades 1-3, the cuts will affect us here at Lawson as the predicted teacher layoffs will affect some of our teachers.  Reducing the middle schools to only one counselor is on the list of probable cuts as well.

Linda Sell, a parent from West Valley, is organizing a parent online discussion group. They would like to be able to address the School Board as representing a large number of parents.  At the moment they can only claim less than 400 parents in our district of 17,000 students. To support this group of parents attempting to speak on behalf of parents, you may join by:
