It was wonderful to have so many at the last PTA meeting. Karl Sonntag, our principal, gave an update on the search for a new Vice Principal to replace Mr. Cellini. He had over 40 applicants and has narrowed the list to 3 potential candidates. He has assured us that if they are not the right candidates for Lawson, he is willing to wait until he finds the perfect fit for Lawson. Digital portfolios of the students will be rolled out prior to the Christmas break. They are firming up the security contract for the site now, so the kids will be working on their portfolios soon.
Hope for a foreign language as an elective at Lawson is still alive, but at present, there is not an eligible teacher available. The teacher must be credentialed and meet the district standards for hiring. Unfortunately, there were only two applicants for the position and neither met the district criteria. Mr. Sonntag has assured us that he is working on the issue. In addition, he must be in discussion with the Fremont High School District to ensure that our students would fufill the requirements and are proficient enough to enter high school at Spanish 2 level. Currently, Cupertino Middle School students complete 2 years of Spanish at the middle school to enter at the Spanish 2 level in high school. The program is different at every middle school, so just because we offer a class does not mean that the kids would automatically receive one year of credit at the high school level.
Kat Tatley, our student representative, reported that the video podcasting of the announcements is going well, and that Mr. Cellini is watching them from Montclaire Elementary. Crazy Sock Day and Pajama Day was a lot of fun with many people participating. There will be a Color Clash coming up in December that will be fun.
Assemblies for the year will be firmed up at the next PTA meeting, so if you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me before then with your ideas!
Thank you so much for your commitment to making Lawson a great place for our kids.
Go Lightning,
Ione Yuen
