Please join us this Thursday, Feb. 12th at 7:15 in the Library to honor our Reflections participants and to hear about a school in Fullerton, CA that has successfully implemented a program with one laptop per child for the entire school. Karl Sonntag, our principal, will be discussing how their program is managed and how we could implement it here at Lawson.
The California state budget mess is affecting our children. Currently, the district is trying very hard to be responsible with the money we have, and has frozen accounts to see how much the state provides to us. Money that the state should have sent to the Cupertino Union School District was delayed until April, and now will be delayed until July. Therefore it will be delivered in the next fiscal year, and the projection is that we will have a reduction based on the money we received in this fiscal year. The district is now projecting to have a $900,000 loss this year and will be negative 8 million dollars for the next fiscal year.
The district is attempting to mitigate this and will present a parcel tax to benefit the Cupertino Union School District. The parcel tax will be for $125 per parcel for 6 years and will provide an additional $4 million for our schools. This will be about $10 a month per parcel to help keep our great school programs intact. There will be a community oversight committee for these funds and the funds cannot be used for administrators’ salaries. There is also an exemption for anyone 65 years and older so as not to affect those on a fixed income. The parcel tax will be in a mail in ballot that will be sent to voters in April and due back by May 5th. Please be sure to send in your ballot as soon as possible. Families with children in Cupertino schools are only 26% of the voting population, so every vote will count! As with any tax increase, a 67% majority is required for passage. If we want to keep our schools strong, we will need your help to pass this measure to ensure that our children so not suffer the loss of the great programs that are offered at Lawson.
Everyone is invited to attend the Silicon Valley Region: Destination Imagination tournament, being held on Saturday, March 7th at Independence High School, from 7:30 AM - 7:00 PM. Seven Lawson teams are competing - Come cheer them on!
Lawson Destination Imagination Teams will be rehearsing for the tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28th. Parents and students who have been wondering what DI is all about are invited to stop in to watch. To be respectful of the team creativity, we ask that anyone associated with a team competing in the same challenge leave the room when a team is presenting that challenge.
