Our second Staff Appreciation luncheon, Winter Wonder, will be this Friday in the Staff Lounge hosted by the seventh grade parents. Please contact Kathy Fujii at if you could bring something yummy for the lunch. If you can help set –up or clean-up, that would be appreciated as well, or if you would just like to contribute that would be appreciated as well. We have a great staff at Lawson, we just want to make sure they know how much we appreciate all they do for our kids!
Phil Quon gave us an update on the district budget last week in the Event Center. This year we are looking at a $900,000 surplus, with a $2 million dollar loss for the next two years based on the best case scenario for the district. The district is attempting to be proactive in meeting this financial problem and is considering a parcel tax of $124 per year for 6 years. As someone in the audience pointed out, this would be about $10 per month to maintain the great education standards we expect for our kids. Those over 65 years old would be exempted from the parcel tax so those on a fixed income will not be overly burdened. Unfortunately, the state budget crisis will affect our children, so the district is trying to work to minimize the effects on our kids. As more information becomes available, we will pass it on to our parents, so please stay tuned.
In the meantime, please consider e-mailing our local legislators and the governor to encourage them to minimize the effects on our kids. There is contact links and a sample letter on the CUSD website (Dec. 16, 2008).
This last Saturday was the CEEF Gala. It was wonderful to have 2 tables representing Lawson and to cheer on Ms. Barrango, our Lawson Teacher of the Year. It was a wonderful event and a wonderful cause. CEEF provided art, music and PE and math support for all of the elementary schools in our district and gives grants to schools for parent education. All of us have benefited from CEEF, so please consider supporting CEEF in any way you can. We would like to extend thanks to Shalini Pachauri for putting together our basket and to Cathy Tam and Suman Ganapathy for being wonderful representatives of Lawson on the CEEF Gala committee. It was wonderful to see many Lawson parents representing many other schools as well.
Go Lightning!
