There are only 14 more days to the 2008-09 School year!

This year's goals for the PTA:
1. Establish better communication with our parent community
2. Increase our membership by 50 more people
3. Establish a parent coffee for our incoming 6th grade parents

I feel that I can confidently say that I think that we accomplished our goals for the year. We have worked hard to make our PTA website useful, informative, and relevant. We established weekly updates to keep our parent informed about what is happening at the school. We have been able to celebrate student achievements as they are passed along to us.

Our membership has grown this year, and I want to encourage you to join the PTA so that our voice can be heard in Sacramento on behalf of our children as they work out the budget. The PTA has some political sway, but every member counts. If every Lawson parent was a member of the PTA, the PTA would have 2000 more points in the eyes of the lawmakers. If you do not call your local representatives in Sacramento, being part of the PTA assures that our children are being represented and someone is speaking to the representatives and the Governor on their behalf especially as they again rework the budget with the failure of the recent state propositions. The school district is expecting that the state will cut $3.6 million dollars to us as we end this fiscal year. Luckily, with the freezes made earlier in the year and other program adjustments, the Cupertino School District is able to handle this anticipated shortfall for this year.

We enjoyed a successful WEB coffee for the incoming 6th grade parents as they dropped off their children for WEB. It was wonderful to welcome the new parents and chat with them to allow them to meet some of the Lawson Community.

We are beginning to prepare for next year, so in early August be sure to check our PTA homepage for ways that you can help out. We will need help with textbooks, stuffing first day of school packets, selling gym clothes and anything else that comes up!

Thank you for all of your support for this year,

Regards,
Ione Yuen
